Two women OICs suspended for alleged negligence of duty

The services of the Women and Children Bureau OICs of the Nikaweratiya and Kotawehera Police Stations has been suspended with immediate effect.

The two OICs had been suspended on charges of having seriously failed in carrying out their duties by not accepting the complaint made by the mother of the 13-year-old child who was brutally assaulted by the stepmother and the Monnekulama Grama Seva officer.

The duties of the two OICs had been suspended by the SSP in charge of the Nikaweratiya Division Upul Chandana Abeysinghe.

The two OICs facing suspension of duties are Sub Inspector (SI) Imali Lakshi Hemachandra, the OIC of the Nikaweratiya Police Women and Children bureau and SI Sandarekha Attanayake, the OIC of the Kotawehera Police Women and Children bureau.

Meanwhile, Public Administration and Home Affairs Minister Janaka Bandara Tennakoon, has instructed the Kurunegala District Secretary Gamini Illangaratne to suspend the Grama Niladhari involved in the incident.

Minister Tennakoon has sent a team of officials from his Ministry to Nikaweratiya area to investigate the incident.

Three persons including two women and a man who were arrested for beating the 13 year old girl were remanded by Nikaweratiya Magistrate court.

The man who is the father of the victim child and two other suspects were produced before Magistrate court on Saturday by the Police. Accordingly, the father, step mother of the girl and her ( step mother’s sister) sister who was a Grama Niladhari were remanded.

The incident of the brutal beating to the girl after binding her hands and legs by the two women had been videoed by a youth who then had uploaded that footage to the social media sparking a public outcry.
