Speaker calls for new political culture

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya said that a new political culture must be introduced at the next Parliamentary election with people who will be accepted both in and outside Parliament.

“The political culture that prevailed decades ago is completely different now and the country looks to the dawning of a new political era where anger, hate, deception and character assassination are condemned,” the Speaker said.

Speaker Jayasuriya was speaking at the opening of the E.L Senanayake Childrens’ Library yesterday which was renovated with a financial grant of Rs.35 million by the Kandy Municipal Council.

A statue of late E.L Senanayake placed opposite the E.L Senanayake Childrens’ Library was also opened by the Speaker.

The Speaker said that Parliamentarians can win public respect by indulging in decent politics and hard work and not through force.

“E.L Senanayake was one such politician who spent his wealth for the betterment of the people. He also helped his party achieve greater heights as a senior statesman. He is also the brainchild behind the fertilizer subsidy. Apart from that he was also dedicated to maintaining the decorum and dignity of the House during his tenure as the Speaker,” Speaker Jayasuriya added.
