Customs nabs two Sri Lankans with haul of foreign cigarettes

Two Sri Lankans were arrested by the Customs on Saturday at the arrival terminal of the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) for smuggling in a haul of foreign cigarettes to the country from Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Additional Customs Director General and Media Spokesman Sunil Jayaratne said the suspects (28 and 38) are self employees. One suspect is a resident of Maligawatte, Colombo and the other is a resident of Gothatuwa.

The suspects had arrived at the BIA on UL 208 flight of the Sri Lankan Airlines at 5.30am on Saturday. The Customs Media Spokesman said the haul of foreign cigarettes is worth about Rs 3.5 million. The haul consisted of 287cartons and 129 packets (59,980 sticks) of cigarettes. The haul of foreign cigarettes had been confiscated and a fine of Rs. 70,000 had been imposed on the suspects.

Superintendents of Customs Eric Perera, Vipula Fernando and Thimal Warnakulasooriya and Assistant Superintendents of Customs Mohamed Razeen, Suresh Madarasinghe, Thilina Wijesekara, Lahiru Indika, Dakshitha Alahakoon, Shanaka Kumarage, Kasun Srimal and Hirantha Jayasinghe carried out the arrest.
