Four arrested over gem merchant’s murder

Galle Police have arrested four suspects in connection with the murder of a gem merchant in Thalapitiya which occurred about three months ago.

The suspects were arrested at Mihideenwatte and Nugaduwa areas in Galle after a wide-ranging investigation into the incident.

The suspects had entered the businessman’s residence to plunder valuables while he was sleeping. However, as the businessman woke up unexpectedly, the suspects had stabbed him with a screwdriver, killing him, police investigations further revealed.

Police had examined the CCTV footage in the vicinity at the time of the crime, but had failed to identify the criminals. Thereafter, they had examined the SIM cards of mobile phones of some suspected persons and found vital information linked to the crime which led to the arrest of the suspects.

The deceased is a gem merchant named Mohamed Lebbe Marikkar alias Gaffir Hajiar of No. 46, Thalapitiya, Galle. The murder took place on September 10, 2019.

Three out the four suspects have been already remanded, while the other suspect was to be produced before the Galle Magistrate yesterday evening.

A team of officers of Galle police Criminal Investigation Department led by OIC IP Dinesh Nishantha De Silva had made the arrest.
