Rains renew dengue threat

The Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine Ministry and the National Dengue Control Unit warns the public of an outbreak of dengue and requests anyone who has fever to take the NS1 test at a state hospital within two days (48 hours) of the fever. The test helps to diagnose dengue fever accurately and quickly.

Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi at the discussion with officials of the Health Ministry and the Epidemiology Unit.

All fever patients should take Paracetamol only. They should not take Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Diclofenac Sodium or Mefenamic Acid, all of which are Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs), or steroids such as Prednisolone, Methyl-Prednisolone and Dexamethasone. These drugs could cause Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) which can be fatal.

Only prompt medical treatment can save the life of a patient suffering from Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever or Dengue Shock Syndrome. There is no age or sex difference for dengue fever. All fever patients need rest at home and they should not attend school, tuition or work. All dengue patients need to use mosquito nets, the National Dengue Control Unit sources said.

According to the sources, patients suffering from fever should be extra careful when the fever goes down because symptoms of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) and Dengue Shock Syndrome could arise at this stage. The patients can mistakenly think that he or she is cured at this stage. The symptoms of DHF include pain in the stomach, vomiting, bleeding from gums, red patches on the skin, coldness in the hands and legs, less urination, and paleness of the skin.

Persons such as pregnant mothers, persons over the age of 70, overweight persons, infants under one year and persons suffering from chronic diseases such as diabetes and kidney diseases should seek medical treatment for any type of fever without delay or without resorting to home remedies, the sources said.
