Human-elephant conflict in Kurunegala worsens

Wild elephants have destroyed 59 houses and 50 in 2017 in Galgamuwa, Kurunegala last year.

Six wild elephants and two people had been killed last year in the elephant-human conflict, Kurunegala Senior Divisional Secretary W.E.Jayathilake said.

He said that steps have been taken to address the elephant-human conflict and Rs. 1,900 million has been allocated by the government in this regard.

Compensation payments for deaths caused in elephants’ attack have been increased as well to 1 million, he said.
