Record income from fines on errant traders in Matara

Matara Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) officials have accrued a record income of Rs. 3,706,000 via court fines from errant traders who were nabbed in over 1,000 raids last year.

Displaying and selling food items unfit for human consumption, selling over the fixed rates, selling electrical appliances without issuing warranty cards, altering set prices on labels and selling them at high prices, selling expired food items, non-displaying price lists, hoarding essential consumer items, violating orders, rules and regulations imposed by the CAA were some of the offences they committed, CAA officials said.

Arrested errant traders were prosecuted in the Magistrates’ Courts of Matara, Deiyandara and Morawaka, the officials said.
