‘Irrigation Ordinance needs amendments’

Irrigation Engineers urge the government to review the irrigation ordinance and make necessary amendments to empower departmental officers to manage and develop water resources efficiently.

They said they undergo various difficulties in planning, constructing, managing, protecting and conserving water resources because of the ambiguities in the law and regulations of the ordinance.

They said they cannot take actions against those who encroach on reservations of 75 major tanks and 300 medium scale tanks that come under the Irrigation Department since they do not have necessary power to discourage them.

These people cause irreparable damage to the tanks and contaminate water in them, they said. They said the irrigation laws and regulations are over 120 years old and practically they are not enough to eliminate illegal activities in tank reservations.

The powers that irrigation authorities need have been vested in Government Agents and Divisional Secretaries, they said.
