Walls of the ancient Galle Fort Post Office had been removed by the Navy on a Court order on Thursday.

A wall of the old building collapsed on December 7, and the entire building was on the verge of collapse thereafter. The issue was taken up at the Galle District Coordinating Committee (DCC) Meeting on December 9 and a directive was issued to the Galle Municipal Council, Postal Department and Galle Heritage Foundation ordering them to take steps to remove the walls.

Since these authorities did not carry out the DCC orders, Galle police reported the matter to Galle Magistrate Harshana Kekulawela and obtained a conditional order to the Archeological Department, Galle Heritage Foundation and Postal Department in this regard.

The Galle Heritage Foundation consequently told court that they lacked technology to remove such a colossal structure and pleaded the Magistrate to grant approval to get the assistance of the Navy in carrying out the removal. Accordingly, the Magistrate issued the order and the Navy removed the walls.
