First Malay WPC Layla Packeer no more

Layla Packeer, the first Malay police officer passed away yesterday afternoon. Layla's father Samsudeen Packeer was a Chief Inspector of Police. Born on February 22,1930 she was 88 at the time of her death. She schooled at Ananda College which was a mixed school during her era. Prior to becoming a police officer, Laila was a teacher and taught at a convent in Matara. She was recruited to the police force in 1953. In an interview to the sister publication Sunday Observer, Layla said that the concept of recruiting women was the idea of the late IGP Richard Aluvihare. Only four women was selected with her, including Hema Gunawardena, Janita Perera, Lanerolle and Layla. Layla Packeer is married and had two daughters. Her Janaza was held at her residence 418, Nawala road yesterday.
