Rs.120 bn needs to be allocated from budget for drug purchases- Minister

An estimated Rs.120 billion needs to be allocated for drug purchases from the next budget. Legal action will be taken against those involved in corruption and malpractices revealed by the Presidential Commission Report, Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi said.

After an inspection tour at Apeksha Hospital, Maharagama the Minister said that the money allocated for the purchase of drugs comes from the taxpayers. Therefore, the people are entitled to receive a satisfactory service from the state hospitals.

Minister Wanniarachchi pointed out that the present Government's policy is for the Health Ministry to purchase high quality drugs at a reasonable price for distribution to the public through state health institutions.

"The Presidential Commission Report has revealed about certain acts of corruption and malpractices that had taken place during the previous regime regarding the purchasing of drugs. Legal action will be taken against those responsible," the Minister added.
