Four Chinese power sets for the Aruwakkalu Sanitary Landfill Project arrived at the Colombo Harbour yesterday.

They were unloaded and kept at the Railway Department until constructions at the Kelaniya Transmission Station are complete, Western Region Solid Waste Management Project Director and Engineer Sarath Bandara said. He told the Daily News that the cost of four power sets imported from China was USD 8.8 million excluding taxes, and that the cost was borne by the Government.

“The design of the power sets is the same as new luxury S14 Chinese Power set being used for ‘Denuwara Menike’. They power sets are green in colour,” he added.

Eng. Bandara further observed that the Ministry has also awarded tenders to purchase 34 transporter wagons and 94 containers for the purpose of transporting garbage to Aruwakkalu by train.

However, he said the construction work at the Kelaniya Transmission Station saw some delay due to heavy rains. Therefore, he said it was unlikely that it would be ready by the end of March as previously planned.

The transportation of garbage from Colombo to the Aruwakkalu Sanitary Landfill has temporarily been stopped now following a Government decision.

This was after considering the practical problems including the cost borne to transport garbage by trucks. Instead, the Kerawalapitiya dumping site is presently being used.

The Aruwakkalu Waste Management Project was launched following the Meethotamulla garbage dump tragedy in 2017 as a sustainable and scientific solution to the solid waste disposal problem.
