‘SLMC not in talks with ACMC’

Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) has rejected speculation that the party is going to holds discussions with the All Ceylon Makkal Congress (ACMC) to form an alliance to contest the forthcoming general elections.

The two main Muslim parties, the SLMC headed by Rauf Hakeem and the ACMC led by Rishad Bathiudeen were part of the alliance of the New Democratic Front (NDF) led by Sajith Premadasa at the recent Presidential polls.

An official from the SLMC’s Media Unit said that his party has no intention of joining the ACMC in its effort to win the elections.

The ACMC has five seats and the SLMC has seven seats in Parliament. There are 20 Muslims members in the Legislature which includes 18 in the Opposition and two from the ruling party, namely, Faiszer Mustapha and Cader Masthan from the UPFA.

An official from the ACMC said that these are rumours created by people with vested interests. “No discussions have taken place between the ACMC and the SLMC about a proposed coalition,” the official added.
