The new government headed by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa will give maximum support to entrepreneurs and other individuals who demonstrate their innovative and creative skills through the regular introduction of new products and technology, for both consumption and industries; Small and Medium Enterprise and Enterprise Development & Industries and Supply Management Minister Wimal Weerawansa said.

He was speaking at the inauguration ceremony of a banana fibre apparel exhibition held at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH), recently, which had been organised by the Sri Lanka Institute of Textile and Apparel.

The minister said that using banana fibre to make clothing in Sri Lanka will unveil new vistas in the apparel industry in the future.

While thanking the Sri Lanka Institute of Textile and Apparel and the Moratuwa University for coming up with the innovation, Weerawansa said that making clothing out of banana fibre could create a new path to international markets.

He urged officials to market this new method of making clothes throughout the island, and also to seek export markets for them.

“A country’s economic success and prosperity depends on the technological advancement it embraces, as well as the level of creativity and innovation its people demonstrate in introducing inventions and improvements to current practices, products, and future requirements,” Minister Weerawansa said.
