The Southern Expressway extension from Matara to Hambantota will be opened to the public in the first quarter of this year, Roads and Highways, Ports and Shipping Minister Johnston Fernando said.
“Several issues had cropped up due to the opening of the Southern Expressway extension by the previous government before construction work was completed.We observed several issues in this regard. Yet our government is expected to complete construction work of Southern expressway extension from Matara to Hambantota in the first quarter of this year. That is an essential project and we expect it to be completed in April,”he said. Fernando made these remarks while addressing the Sri Lanka Ports Authority employees yesterday. The Minister added that new government aims at ensuring a steady growth in economy which saw drastic decline during the previous regime. “The construction of the Eastern Container Terminal, a key project bringing development to the maritime sector will be initiated, the minister added.
