Annual survey of industries released

The annual survey of industries (ASI) the successor to the Annual Survey of Manufacturing Industries (ASMI) from 1979 was released recently. Dr I R Bandara said, “It is a valuable report for government officials at different administrative levels, economists, researchers, and others, who are working for and interested in the industrial sector of the country.”

The Economic Census 2013/14 conducted by the Department of Census and Statistics was the base for the new frame of industrial activities and it was used for the ASI 2018. This was the 32nd ASI in the series of industry surveys conducted in Sri Lanka. The reference year for this survey was 2017.

The survey reveals that the number of such industrial establishments in the country was reported to be 20,737. Most of the industrial establishments 17,719 are of the manufacturing subsector and 2,532 industrial establishments are reported to be in the mining and quarrying sub-sector, 351 industrial establishments are engaged in the water supply, sewerage, waste management, and remediation activities and 135 industrial establishments are in the electricity, gas, steam, and air conditioning supply sub-sector. 0.5 million people are employed by either sole ownership or partnership arrangement.

Over 1.47 million people are engaged in the industrial sector and 39 thousand in the mining and quarrying sector. 26 thousand people are engaged in the water service sector and 13 thousand people are employed in the remediation sector.

Industrial output was measured at Rs 4.8 trillion. Intermediate consumption was estimated at Rs 3 trillion thereby making total value added at Rs 1.8 trillion. It is estimated that every person in the industrial sector on average contributes Rs 1.25 million to the economy.
