Registration made mandatory from January 1 for places selling food items

Tea shops, restaurants, hotels, canteens, eateries and other such places required to register with the Medical Officer of Health (MOH) through the Public Health Inspectors (PHIs) of the relevant area from January 1, Environmental, Occupational Health and Food Safety Director of the Health Ministry Dr. Lakshman Gamlath said.

He was addressing a press conference at the Health Promotion Bureau (HPB) in Colombo yesterday.

He said that the registration will be given only for those that meet the Government’s standards. One year will be given for them to meet the Government’s standards and get the registration.

According to Dr. Gamlath, the colour code system for sugar, salt and fat will be introduced for solid food from the same date.

Under the new regulation, all solid food packets/covers required to display green, amber and red colour for the content of sugar, salt and fat. It will help people select food as per their health condition.

If the sugar content is 22 grams per 100 grams of a food, its colour code will be red and if it is between eight grams and 22 grams, the colour code will be amber. The sugar content in 100 grams of a food item is less than eight grams it will be in Green, he said.

If the salt content in 100 grams of a food item is 1.25 grams, red will the colour code. If it is between 0.25 grams and 1.25 grams, it will be amber. If the salt content of a food item is less than 0.25 grams, the colour code will be green, he said.

The fat content of 100 grams of a food item is 17.5 grams and its colour code will be red and if it is between three grams and 17.5 grams, it will be amber. Green will be given if the fat content is less than three grams, he added.
