Good move to enrol all qualified to varsity - UNP MP

UNP MP Sandith Samarasinghe said it was a good move to enrol all Advanced Level students to universities but said a solution had to be found to the lack of hostel facilities and lecturers.

Addressing a press briefing at UNP party headquarters, Sirikotha yesterday, he said: “Although it is a positive move, there are many issues in this enrollment. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had not presented any solution to the scarcity of lecturers. And also an issue will crop up due to lack of space. These issues must be addressed properly,” he said.

UNP MP former minister Vajira Abeywardana said it is unjustifiable for the government to say that their projects are hindered as they do not have a 2/3rds majority in parliament. He also said that either to vote in favour or vote against the proposals forwarded by the government, Parliament must be convened without delay.

“When we came into power, we too did not have a majority in Parliament.Yet we had a 100 day programme and the public benefited. Public and private sector salary revisions were done. We increased public sector salaries by Rs.10,000 a month. Pensions were increased, Samurdhi welfare was increased and empowered motherhood. But currently the government has gifted the public with increases in the price of essential goods,” he added.

Abeywardana also denied the statement made by Minister Bandula Gunawardana attributing the inclement weather as a reason for the increase in vegetable prices. “During our era also we had extreme weather, yet we did not add a burden to the public” he said.
