Special Unit to combat Colombo North crimes

A special operations unit led by Western Province North DIG Varuna Jayasundera has been set up to combat organised crime gangs operating in the Kelani Valley region extending from Avissawella to Wellampitiya. This unit has been created with officers transferred from the STF to normal police duties, DIG Varuna Jayasundera said.He was the former head of the STF Intelligence and organised crime combat unit. This special unit has been entrusted with combating illegal land reclamation and ransom taking from businessmen carried out by organised criminal gangs. He said this unit had been able to acquire two plots of marshy land in extent of two and three acres in Mulleriyawa reclaimed by underworld kingpin Angoda Lokka using his agents from his hideout in India.

He said these underworld gangsters had also been carrying out a racket involving the sale of reclaimed state land by preparing forged deeds.

Almost 10 percent of the proceeds of the sale of these lands go to the credit of Angoda Lokka.

Investigations revealed that Angoda Lokka raked in almost Rs 2.5 to 3 million monthly through these rackets involving ransom taking and illegal land sales. People are requested to provide information about any criminal gangs operating in their areas to the unit on 0713680001.
