National Data Center to keep track of citizen info

The proposed National Data Center will be able to track foreign travels of people and know when they are back in the country, it was announced yesterday.

The system would also be able to track the person’s second destination of travel. This system will enable tracking of people who flee after breaking laws.

The death of any citizen must be updated in the centralized data bank within three months.He added that necessary safeguards will be taken to protect confidential data of citizens including their family details and medical information. Data Protection laws will be enacted in future in this regard if necessary.

The new system will bring together information such as the NIC, driver licence, immigration and emigration documents, birth and death registration and all other personal data under one national data centre, State Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena told a press conference held at the Information Department yesterday.
