Steps to control fuel usage in SLTB buses

The Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) has introduced a ‘fuel operation system’ to provide drivers with instructions on minimising combustion of fuel in buses. This follows directives issued by Passenger Transport, Power and Energy Minister Mahinda Amaraweera to the SLTB directorate to ensure the use of fuel sparingly in order to bolster SLTB’s income, a ministry media statement said.

The media release said the SLTB’s fleet of buses totalling 5,400 covers 102.2 million miles daily. The daily fuel combustion of the SLTB fleet amounts to 375,000 litres while its total daily income is around Rs. five to six million, an analysis made by the SLTB management has revealed.

According to the analysis, there was a great difference in oil combustion in a bus when it is manned by two drivers. This may be due to their styles of driving.

The new fuel operation system to be launched in January would also be an environment-friendly project, the statement added.
