Fazi Nagar in Muttur in the Trincomalee district drew the highest attention of all Sri Lankans six years before with the horrendous and shocking news of Rizana Nafeek (allegedly 17 years of age), a Sri Lankan girl who was convicted and subsequently executed in Saudi Arabia for the alleged murder of four-month-old baby.

However, with the release of the results of the G.C.E. (A/L) Examination 2019 a completely contrasting story of a 16-year-old student who registered an outstanding academic achievement has brought glory to the same township.

The student is Musadika Fathima of Fazi Nagar, a student of Zahira College, Trincomalee. She had initially studied at Imam Shazzi Vidyalaya in Muttur and after passing G.C.E. O/L Examination she was admitted to Zahira College for her A/Levels.

She is the youngest of a poverty-stricken family of seven, which includes her parents. She has an elder sister and three elder brothers. Since her childhood, she had the ambition of becoming a doctor of medicine. With that ambition, she studied with commitment and determination under difficult conditions.

Her father who is a brickmaker worked hard day and night to provide for the family. They live in a tiny makeshift tin-roofed dwelling.

They have suffered much inconveniences as their dwelling is vulnerable to the adversities of the weather.

Musadika’s father worked tirelessly to support her to study without interruption. Musadika was also determined to ease her father’s suffering. Hence she marched ahead braving all hurdles that came her way.

At the recent A/L Examination, she emerged first in the Bio Science stream in the Trincomalee district.

Commenting over her academic achievement, Musadika said that if one has a firm determination about his or her ambition, adversity is not an obstacle in overcoming any challenge.

She expressed her gratitude and respect for her father who had toiled for years to provide for her family.

“On this occasion, I thank all my teachers who taught me from Grade One up to the A/L classes,” she said.

“On completion of my higher education, I hope to be and obstetrician and gynecologist and serve the people of my country.”
