Met. Dept. warning: Heavy rain

A special advisory for heavy rains was issued by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre today. The advisory is in effect until tomorrow morning.

Accordingly heavy rain falls reaching 200 mm are likely at some places in Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Trincomalee and Vavuniya districts and heavy falls about 100-150 mm are likely at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces and in Batticaloa, Ampara, Nuwara-Eliya, Matale, Puttalam and Mannar districts. Fairly heavy falls about 100 mm are likely at some places in Southern province and in Kandy, Kurunegala, Mullaitivu and Kilinochchi districts.The advisory warns of landslides in hill areas, water inundation in low catchment areas and uprooting of large avenue trees.

Three people have died and 06 persons injured in the perilous weather conditions prevailing in the country at the moment. Nearly 27,000 persons including 7565 families have been affected by the advisory weather conditions as well. The Disaster Management Center said that 3314 families including 11,916 persons who have been directly affected by the weather conditions have been temporarily moved to safe locations. The most recent rescue operations by Sri Lanka Defense Forces include 70 persons in Batticaloa and Puttalam and 40 more persons in Manampitiya.

DMC Deputy Director Pradeep Kodippili speaking to media said that the most affected districts by the prevailing weather conditions include Puttalam, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Batticaloa, Ampara and all districts in Central Province. The Defense Ministry in cooperation with the Disaster Management Center has launched 24 hour operations to rescue and facilitate the persons affected.
