Consumers say the Dambulla Dedicated Economic Centre (DDEC) sells vegetables at very high prices these days.

They say the upcountry vegetables are sold at high prices while vegetables from other areas are also sold at high prices. A kilo of vegetables such as carrot, beans, leaks, bitter melon, and capsicum are sold at much as Rs. 200 and other vegetables, too, are sold at Rs. 100, they said. The vegetables such as pumpkin and muskmelon (Kekeri) that have been sold at low prices earlier are also sold now at Rs. 75, they said.

A vegetable trader at the centre said a low quantity of vegetables has been brought to the centre these days but many outside traders arrive at the centre to buy vegetables. “This has caused the price increase, he said.
