Country poised to achieve SDGs before 2030 - Vasudeva

Having achieved the Millennium Development Goals in water and sanitation, Sri Lanka is in a better position to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) before 2030, said the State Minister of Water Supply Facilities Vasudeva Nanayakkara.

He was making the inaugural speech at the three-day workshop on ‘Regional Rapid Action Learning on Sanitation and Hygiene’ held at Goldi Sands Hotel in Negombo yesterday.

The workshop was organized by the Regional Center for Sanitation (RCS) and Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC) in collaboration with the IDS of UK.

The State Minister noted that Sri Lanka has taken a number of measures in reaching those without access to sanitation over the past five decades.

“The country has empowered over 87 per cent of the population with access to improved sanitation and 89 per cent of the population have access to improved water supply,” he said.

“Currently, over 50 per cent of citizens are connected with pipe water supply,” he added.

The workshop themed ‘Leaving No One Behind’ will conclude tomorrow (11).
