All facilities for long distance SLTB, private bus crews

The Government has decided to provide restroom facilities for drivers and conductors of long distance buses, the Ministry of Passenger Transport Management announced yesterday.

According to Ministry sources, the decision comes following the findings of a research conducted under the supervision of the National Transportation Commission.

According to the research findings, most of the fatal accidents outside Colombo city have happened due to the negligence of private and Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) bus drivers, who very often working under fatigue.

A meeting on the prevention of accidents to provide better transportation facilities for the passengers was held at the Ministry premises headed by Passenger Transportation Management Minister Mahinda Amaraweera.

It was revealed that drivers and conductors of long distance buses do not receive adequate rest due to lack of facilities in or out of Colombo.

Accordingly, the government has decided to provide fully fledged rest room facilities for the long distance private and SLTB bus drivers and conducters. Minister Amaraweera proposed to establish the rest room facilities near the Bastian Mawatha Private bus stand. Considering that the whole area will be turned into a Transportation Hub and the rest room facilities will be established as a temporary measure. Fully air-conditioned containers along with canteen, sanitary and other facilities will be included.

Minister Amaraweera said the rest room facilities will be established within a month’s time.
