Minister released from Bribery case

The Colombo High Court yesterday ordered to release Indigenous Medicine State Minister, Piyankara Jayaratne from a case filed by the Bribery Commission involving SriLankan Catering Limited.

When the case came up before Colombo High Court Judge Manjula Thilakaratne, the Bribery Commission sought Court’s permission to withdraw the indictment since the case has been filed without the written consent of the three Commissioners of the Bribery Commission. The High Court Judge accepted the request and allowed the Bribery Commission to withdraw the indictment and ordered to release State Minister Jayaratne from the case.

The Bribery Commission had filed a case against State Minister Piyankara Jayaratne when he was Civil Aviation Minister, under the Bribery Act over influencing the Chief Executive Officer of Sri Lankan Catering Limited to pay Rs.330,000 from Sri Lankan Catering funds to another company named Marawila Gambada Caterers in 2014.
