Kurunegala Schools team emerges champions

Kurunegala Schools team beat Kandy District team 32-19 in the final and walked away with the Dialog Junior National Netball Championship title as the tournament concluded at the Torington Place courts yesterday.


Popular Singer/Dialog Ambassador, Umaria Sinhwansa, who graced the event as a special guest, Victoria Lakshmi, President, Netball Federation of Sri Lanka and Harsha Samaranayake, Senior General Manager – Group Marketing, Dialog Axiata PLC, jointly handover the championship trophy to Hiruni Nethma Dayaratne, skipper of the Sri Lanka School’s – Kurunegala HFC team.

Kurunegala team consisted of Holy Family Convent players and dominated the final from the beginning scoring 8/4, 8/5, 9/8, 7/7 in four quarters.

Kurunegala lasses had the better of Netfire team Colombo (22/11) in the first semis while Kandy team beat Kalutara Schools team (23/17) in the other semifinal.

Kalutara Schools team won the third place defeating Netfire team Colombo (37/33).

Altogether 30 under 21 teams participated in the tournament and the Netball Queen award for the best player was won by Kurunegala Schools team’s Hiruni Nethma. The Best Shooter award was won by Kurunegala team’s Uthpala Sajini Rathnayaka while Kandy team’s Wisa Feros was adjudged the Best Middle order player. Sethmi Dinoshi of Kurunegala team was picked as the Best Defensive Player.

The coaches of last 16 teams of the tournament was given a certificate of appreciation by the Netball Federation.
