Seven WSPs promoted to the rank of SSP

Seven Female Police officers have been promoted to the rank of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), according to police sources.

The Police Commission’s approval has been granted for the promotion of the seven Women SPs after having fulfilled the eligibility criteria.Among those promoted are A.G.N.D. Seneviratne, S.A.R. Jayasundara, W.J.Pathmini, R.A.D.Kumari, D.S. Periyapperuma, H.W.I.S. Muthumala and G.J.M. Ariyasena.

“However, H.M.L.R. Amarasena, Director of the Women’s and Children’s Bureau is on the waiting list for promotion and will be promoted upon completion of an inquiry,” Police sources said.

This is the highest rank that women police officers have so far been promoted to and previously there was one other female who had held this rank.

It was in 1952 that women were enrolled to the Police force for the first time.
