Malawatte Chapter Chief Prelate Ven. Thibbatuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Thera stressed the need for a strong government to support the development drive of newly-elected President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

He stated this when newly-appointed Minister Wimal Weerawansa made a courtesy call on him in Kandy, yesterday.

The thera said the attempt to dissolve Parliament soon after the recent Presidential Election might have been averted due to the pension issue of the first-time MPs in the House. Minister Weerawansa also called on Asgiriya Chapter Chief Prelate Ven. Warakagoda Sri Gnanratane Thera.

The Chief Prelate reminded the minister of the great service rendered by the Maha Sangha at the last Presidential Election and urged that the link should be further maintained.

Minister Weerawansa, on this occasion, said that the President has Constitutional powers to dissolve Parliament only in next March, and that a two-thirds majority consent is required to do it before that.

He also said that the next general election would most probably be held between next April and May.
