Minister orders SLPA officials to maintain clean port

Minister of Roads & Highways, Ports and Shipping Johnston Fernando advised officers of Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) to maintain the port premises clean and cleared of unwanted things, recently .

Addressing the occasion the minister noted the importance of been a clean and organized institution as the Colombo port is being operated as a destination for cruise ships carrying thousands of foreign tourists, over the years. The Minister who further expressed views said that maintaining an attractive view inside the port premises is compulsory in the task of promoting Sri Lanka as a top rated tourist destination. Furthermore the minister stressed the importance of a cleaner environment for physical and mental well-being of the employees, which will directly impact the organizational success.

In the process of removing unusable loads out of the port premises such as iron parts and debris SLPA is usually taxed by customs. Hence possible steps will be taken to implement a procedure free of taxation, in the process of removing debris, the minister added. Minister Fernando expresses these views in his maiden visit to Colombo port as the minister of ports. He was accompanied by Managing Director of SLPA Captain Athula Hewawitharana and a group of high profile officials.
