Minister requests officials to submit a report on LNG

Passenger Transport and Power and Energy Minister Mahinda Amaraweera requested the officials to submit a report immediately on Kerawalapitiya Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) power plant which is said to have caused a loss of Rs. 90 billion to the government.

Under the Ministry of Power and Energy the previous government had proposed to implement the LNG power plant. A special meeting took place at the Ministry of Petroleum Resources Development to discuss regarding the controversial matter today.

According to the facts revealed at the meeting, as the contract was handed over to a China company instead of giving to a company which has 63 percent ownership to the government has caused the loss of Rs. 90 billion.  It was also disclosed that while a local company had offered the highest bid for the LNG tender, due to manipulations of some of officials in the ministry the tender was given to a company that had offered a lower bid. The relevant local company members and the Power ad Energy Ministry officials too participated.

The Minister requested that a report be submitted on this transaction and a special meeting will be held on December 5 to discuss the matter broadly.
