24-day-old infant dies of unknown causes

An infant born at the Mahamodara Maternity Hospital in Galle has died 24 days after its birth, on admission to the Galle Karapitiya Teaching Hospital. The cause of death is yet to determined.

The mother of the deceased infant, 32-year-old Indika Udayakumari of Galgasduwa, Galle, said the infant was born on November 6. The infant was said to have been healthy, with no signs of a physical disorder.

Udayakumari said that the infant had been unresponsive when she had attempted to wake it up last Saturday morning. She had then called her husband, and they had rushed the baby to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital.

The infant was taken to the Emergency Trauma Unit and was pronounced dead moments later.
