“About 3,243 HIV patients have been detected from 1987 to June, 2109, Kurunegala District Senior Education Director W.M.Balasooriya said.
He was addressing a meeting of school heads of Kurunegala at Bingiriya Youth Training Centre yesterday.
About 1,600 HIV patients are undergoing treatments from government hospitals. The first HIV person in Sri Lanka was detected in 1987, he said. However, spreading AIDS in Sri Lanka will be controlled by 2025. About 4,000 educational programmes will be held countrywide at school level and about 1,800 PHIs and 4,000 Family Health Nurses will be deployed in this regard.
“The Health Ministry along with the Education Ministry have already launched the programme to mark the World AIDS Prevention Day, which falls every year on December 1,” he said
