Navy seizes 854.1kg beedi leaves

Navy personnel seized 854.1kg of beedi leaves, while they were carrying out raids across Mannar and Mulathivu on November 29 and 30.

Six parcels abandoned on the coastal line of Thunukkai, Mulathivu were detected by the Navy personnel of the North Central Naval Command on November 29 and found 234.1kg of beedi leaves in them. The content has been handed over to the Jaffna Customs Office.

Another 17 parcels of beedi leaves weighing 620kg were found hidden in a bush near the coast of Oluthuduwai, Mannar on November 30. Four suspects, aged 38, 42 and 43, of Kalpitiya and Kandakkuliya have been arrested in this regard and handed them over to the Jaffna Customs Office along with the parcels.

In this year, over 55 tonnes of beedi leaves have been seized by the Navy on 82 occasions and 78 suspects have been apprehended.
