For local level development programmes:

LG members to be granted Rs.5 mn each

Local Government (LG) members will be provided Rs.5 million each within weeks to implement local level development programmes as envisaged in President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s election manifesto, said State Minister of Information and Communication Technology Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardene.

He was speaking at his first press conference at the Information Department Auditorium on assuming duties yesterday. The State Minister said further that this decision was reached based on a proposal formulated on the views at the ‘Gama Samaga Pilisandarak’ programme by former Minister Basil Rajapaksa.

However, hence all the members of Pradeshiya Sabahs and the Provincial Councils would be joined directly to the development programs implemented by the government.

He also said that the government would not halt any of the investment projects commenced by the previous government, unlike the Good Governance government did by suspending for one and half years, the Colombo Port City project that was commenced by the Mahinda Rajapaksa government without any reason.

“The UNP is trying to discourage foreign investors,” he added.
