Heavy rains in Batticaloa, 75 families evacuated

Seventy-five families in Navatkudha East in Batticaloa have been evacuated to temporary shelters at the Batticaloa Methodist pre-school, Navatkudha, yesterday as the low-lying areas have been flooded by heavy rains.

Several low-lying areas in Batticaloa town too have become flooded.

The Batticaloa Municipal Council promptly took action to drain the flood waters through heavy machines.

Mayor Thiagaraja Saravanapavan, Parlimentarian G. Sirinesan, councillors and engineer Chithradevi Lingamoorthy visited the area and supervised the relief operations.

With the onset of the North-East monsoon, Batticaloa district has been experiencing heavy rainfall from the last week. In addition, the Maha season cultivation has been badly affected by the rains.

For the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am yesterday, Batticaloa town experienced rainfall of 48.3 mm as recorded by the Batticaloa Meteorological Department. Meanwhile, the inclement weather also prevents the fishermen from going out to sea.
