‘Nation chose President Rajapaksa due to UNP’s failure’

A series of religious ceremonies were held in the Northwestern Province to mark the victory of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa yesterday and the day before.

Speaking at one such ceremony, which was held at the Gokerella Rajamaha Viharaya, World Solidarity Forum for Justice and Peace in Sri Lanka Head Ven. Mahagalkadawala Punyasara Thera said that the United National Party government has failed the nation, and that it is why the nation voted President Rajapaksa into power.

"Sri Lanka is a Sinhala Buddhist country. This is where the Sinhala language was born and Theravada Buddhism was preserved for the entire world," the thera said. He said the fact that a number of other communities have been able live in harmony and foster their cultures was due to the morals that Buddhism cultivates.

Kurunegala District Parliamentarian Johnston Fernando launched a tree-planting programme in Nikaweratiya to mark President Gotabaya Rajapaksa's victory, and it was coordinated by the Nikaweratiya Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman. Religious ceremonies were also held at the Kurunegala Ethkanda Raja Maha Viharaya, Yaggapitiya Sri Sambodhi Viharaya, and Kurunegala Madame Gama Bauddhaloka Temple to mark the victory of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
