New Crest Gem to crown Maha Seya on November 26

The new Crest Gem for the Ruwanweli Maha Seya is to be exhibited at its premises from November 22 to 25 before being placed on the stupa's pinnacle on November 26, Anuradhapura Government Agent R.M. Wanninayaka said.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is to attend the event as its chief guest and the Crest Gem will be unveiled by Malwatte Chapter Chief Prelate Ven. Thibbotuwawe Sri Sumangala Mahanayake Thera.

A number of pinkamas that were initiated on Monday will conclude on November 26 with an almsgiving for 1,500 Maha Sangha members. The old Crest Gem is to be placed in a cubical in the Maha Seya premises for devotees to worship.

At a media briefing held at the Ruwanweli Maha Seya, Chief Incumbent Ven. Pallegama Hemarathana Nayake Thera said that no direct state funds had been previously provided for the making of the new crest for the stupa.

The entire process has been funded by the Vishwa Parami Trust under the instructions of Atamasthandhipathi Ven. Dr. Pallegama Siriniwasa Nayake Thera, he added.

Ven. Pallegama Hemarathana Nayake Thera added that if the public wishes to contribute to the pinkama that is to be conducted for the 500,000 devotees who are to visit the vihara between November 22 and 26, they could call the vihara on 025-2222-120, or the Anuradhapura District Secretariat Buddhist Affairs Coordinating Officer on 025-2222-239, or the Anuradhapura Municipal Council Commissioner on 025-2222-275.

Anuradhapura Government Agent R.M. Wanninayaka said that the previous Crest Gem of the Maha Seya was placed on its pinnacle on June 17, 1940. It was a gift from the Government of Myanmar.
