Ruwanweli Maha Seya’s Crest Gem display from today

The Crest Gem (Chuda Manikya) to be placed on the historic Ruwanweli Maha Seya in Anuradhapura will be exhibited from today (18) till Wednesday (20) at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) Colombo. Thereafter, the Crest Gem will be escorted to Kurunegala, Ethkanda Vihara on November 21 to be exhibited to devotees.

Coordinating the Ruwanweli Maha Seya’s Pinnacle (Kotha) and Crest Gem unveiling Pinkama, Anuradhapura Government Agent R.M. Wanninayaka told the Daily News that the Crest Gem is scheduled to be exhibited at the Ruwanweli Maha Seya premises from November 22 evening to November 25, having placed it in a specially-designed cubicle.

Government Agent Wanninayaka said all additional infrastructure facilities, including alms-giving centres (danselas) for about 500,000 devotees who are expected to visit Anuradhapura to participate in this rare meritorious event have been arranged.

In addition to the replacement of the old Crest Gem, the Pinnacle of the Maha Seya is being gold plated. Both the Crest Gem and the Pinnacle are more than 80 years old. The previous Crest Gem was found cracked and discoloured, and the copper-plated Pinnacle was discoloured. It was learnt that the Viswa Parami Foundation is shouldering the cost of Rs. 60 Million of the whole process.
