Jaffna roadblocks removed for voter convenience

Two military roadblocks in Palaly and Pallai in the Jaffna Peninsula have been dismantled on the request of the Elections Commission and police top brass to enable freer public movement for voting.

Police Spokesman SSP Ruwan Gunasekera told Daily News that all roadblocks had to be removed by yesterday morning according to election laws. The military had been informed about the legal provisions and the requirement to remove the barriers, he said.

On the request of the Elections Commission, a special Police team led by Senior DIG of the Criminal Investigation Department Ravi Seneviratne were airlifted to Jaffna last afternoon. SDIG Seneviratne will oversee election day activity in the Northern Province today.
