A major global explosion of connectivity is making headway with the possibility of connecting the entire global population and giving access to technology that was never possible or available before, LOLC Group CIO Conrad Dias said.

“Technology connects not only humans, but also everything everywhere. In other words, due to technological advancements, everything from aircraft to animals to plants will get connected,” he said.

Furthermore, by 2020, over 20 billion connected devices and over 1 trillion sensors will be available in the network by 2030 while over 500 billion connected devices and over 100 trillion sensors will be available in the network.

“This tsunami of exponential technologies and convergence of technologies is driving new breed of technology startups in every industry which include FoodTech, MediaTech, HealthTech, ConstructionTech, RoboTech, MedTech, Real estateTech, AutoTech, Travel Tech, RetailTech, HealthTech, RegTech, InsureTech and Finteh,” he told the inauguration of 2nd South Asian Actuarial Conference (SAAC) held in Colombo on Wednesday. It was organised by the Actuarial Association of Sri Lanka (AASL) under the theme ‘Stepping into the Future Trends, Emerging Risks, and Changing Roles’.

Dias quoted Ray Kurzweil, the author of ‘The Singularity Is Near’ who said ‘he believes that computational capacity will continue to grow exponentially and it will eventually rival the raw computing power of the human brain.’

“The exponential growth of computing power will lead us to technological singularity. The singularity comes after the time when our technological creations exceed the computing power of human brain. Kurzweil also talks about modern era’s computational power and compares it to a mouse brain,” Dias said.
