The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Presidential Candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa will declare the Sainthamaruthu Division an urban council after he becomes the president, former Minister Basil Rajapaksa said.

He was speaking at a SLPP political rally in Sainthamaruthu on Monday. Sainthamaruthu Malihaikadu Grand Jummah Mosque President Y.M.Haneefa organised the rally.

Basil Rajapaksa said that if former President Mahinda Rajapaksa was here now, he would speak in Tamil. He said the SLPP has agreed the request of the Grand Jummah Mosque to make the area a UC controlling region and signed an MOU in this regard.

"Gotabaya and Mahinda will bring Sainthamaruthu under an urban council after November 16 when Gotabaya becomes the President. The residents here have been asking for it for many years. The God tests a just and harmonious society bringing in numerous difficulties on them. It was proved when Sainthamaruthu was devastated by the tsunami," Basil Rajapaksa said.

"In 2015, the people of Sainthamaruthu voted for Mahinda Rajapaksa at the Presidential Election. However, their expectation was shattered because the Muslim community was misled by certain elements against Mahinda tarnishing their trust in him. The Yahapalanaya government did not support their livelihoods. Did the Government provide seed paddy and at a reasonable price for their produce? The fishermen, too, were not provided with fishing gear," he said.

"The government neglected farmers of the area and women do not get adequate incomes to run their families when their husbands undergo difficulties. Their necklaces, bracelets and other gold items are pawned at places that exploit them with high interests. A majority of the people now undergo severe hardships to earn an income. Mahinda Rajapaksa and Gotabaya Rajapaksa will give them redress after November 16,” he said.

He said that jobless graduates will be given jobs by Gotabaya once he becomes the President. State Institutions and corporations have over 100,000 vacancies and these will be filled soon after Gotabaya’s victory. “Mahinda Rajapaksa will do what he said. Parliamentarian Wimalaweera Dissanayaka, Former Deputy Minister Myown Mustaffa, Sainthamaruthu Jummah Mosque President M.Y.Haneefa, Municipal Councillors and thousands of SLPP supporters attended.
