HRCSL requests EC to ensure voting rights of Bhikkunis

The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka has written to the Election Commission requesting to ensure the voting rights of some 8000 female Buddhist monks who are not in a position to cast their votes at next Saturday’s presidential election.

In a letter to the Election Commission , the HRCSL informed that thousands of female Buddhist monks are unable to cast their votes, as the Department for Registration of Persons has not issued National Identity Cards identifying them as 'Bhikkhunis' and also they are not registered by the Ministry of Buddha Sasana under the category of 'Bhikkhunis'.

The HRCSL said if the election commission can issue an Identity Card for the group of Bhikkunis it will enable them to vote at the presidential election.

Media reports on the number of Bhikkunis and information on the lack of proper identification documents had been revealed when Bhikkunis had lodged complaints with the commission, the HRCSL in their letter said.
