Third time fine for woman smuggling illicit cigarettes

A Chinese woman found guilty for having 7,600 sticks of smuggled illicit cigarettes in her possession was fined Rs.750,000 by Colombo Fort Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake yesterday.

The Chinese woman was arrested and produced in court by the Kollupitiya police.

Imposing the fine the judge ordered a six month simple imprisonment on her for failure to pay the fine. Delivering his order the Judge said he was imposing a heavy fine on the suspect because she had been fined Rs.75,000 and Rs.35,000 on two earlier occasions too for having in possession 6000 and 3700 illegal cigarettes respectively for repeating the same illegal act. The Judge also ordered police to finger print the suspect. She later left court after paying the fine.
