Accused in Ratmalana triple murder sentenced to death

The accused in the brutal triple murder of his wife and two sons in Ratmalana in 2012 was yesterday sentenced to death by the Colombo High Court.

The accused Vijayamuni Madura Manuranga, who was working as an executive officer in a private company in 2012 was found guilty over burning to death his wife Sachithana Sandamali Fernando and her two children Kushan Sandaruwan in(3) and Ishan Banuka (1 month) in Golumadama, Ratmalana.

The accused had strangled his wife and son to death. The accused had kept the one month old son near the breast of the body of his wife as he was drinking milk and had set fire and had fled closing the door.

The High Court judge further observed that the Judicial Medical Officer (JMO), Dr. Dhammika Ariyaratne’s report on the charred bodies found in their bedroom. She had conducted a lengthy post mortem and reported that the infant had died of suffocation while the mother and the three-year-old child were strangled.

Accordingly, the High Court Judge observed that three year old Sandaruwan and Sachethana Sandamali had been strangled and the other child who was only one month old, had died of suffocation due to the smoke.

He had previously confessed before Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court and admitted the murder had been planned and carried out by him.

He further said that he had killed his wife as she was involved in an affair with another man. But investigating revealed that man had an affair with another woman and killed his wife to be free of her.

The case was taken up before the Colombo High Court Judge Vikum Kaluarachchi, delivering the verdict following a long trial he stated that the charges against the defendant have been proven based on the circumstantial evidence and analyst’s evidence beyond a reasonable doubt by the prosecution and admitted that he had admitted the crime through a confession to the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court.

The High Court Judge also observed that the all statements given by the prosecution witnesses in the case and after considering the facts, Judge declared that the accused will be given the death penalty.

The Attorney General had filed indictment under section 296 of penal code against Vijayamuni Madura Manaranga for murder of his wife Sachithana Sandamali Fernando and her two sons.
