‘Past leaders betrayed nation with five harmful agreements’

Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) National Organizer MP Bimal Rathnayake yesterday alleged that the previous governments led by Ranil Wickremesinghe, Mahinda Rajapaksa and Chandrika Kumaratunga have entered into five agreements harmful to the country which betrayed it to foreign powers during past 25 years and the JVP was the only patriotic party which raised its voice against those agreements.

Addressing the media yesterday at the JVP headquarters, MP Rathnayake stressed that SLPP Presidential candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa and NDF Presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa should make an open statement as to whether they are going to suspend those agreements or not. He charged that the SOFA Agreement signed in 1995 under the leadership of former President Chandrika Kumaratunga was the first agreement that betrayed the country which is still a valid agreement. He questioned as to why the leaders who ruled the country thereafter did not suspend that agreement.

Both parties, the UNP and SLPP remained silent when signing the other agreements – ACSA 1, ACSA 2 and the East Terminal agreement. But the JVP raised its voice against all these agreements.

Commenting on the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) agreement, MP Rathnayake said that the government and the US authorities claim it as a grant. But the ordinary people of this country have no any idea about the contents of this agreement.

Signing an agreement like this during a politically sensitive period cannot be accepted.
