“Using the physical and human resources Uva Province can be developed without government aid. Within 3 months we can increase income of farmers and other professionals by 5%.To achieve that target all should get together and work with dedication.” said, Maithree Gunaratna, Governor, Uva Province.

He was speaking at the opening ceremony of the ‘Uva Kala Ulela’ and Exhibition held at the Senanayaka Park, Badulla.

Speaking further he said, “I studied history and resources of Uva Province and grasped the importance of them. Uva has good natural resources and climate suitable to develop agriculture and other products. Skillful public servants and the others must use their abilities to develop this region. If we develop the Kitul industry, we can produce more kitul treacle and jaggery.

We can use them instead of sugar. If we develop places of tourist attractions, tourist arrival to our province will definitely increase. Arts and crafts production is also a good income resource. In every Pradeshiya sabha areas markets should be opened to sell those products. Even in Colombo we must open a weekend fair. Uva people have been suffering from poverty for a long time. But we can eradicate it within a short period. To do that we must manage our human and physical resources and launch a proper development plan. School teachers, students and other intellectuals too should help in this endeavour to achieve our development targets.
