Elizabeth Moir students stage ‘West Side Story, School Edition’

‘West Side Story’ is famously known as one of the most memorable musicals of all time. Taking inspiration from Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’, the musical transports the star crossed lovers to New York City in the 1950s, trapping them between rival street gangs, and compelling them to navigate a world in which hate, violence and prejudice seem to be taking over.

Billed as one of the greatest love stories of all time, the musical is still heart wrenchingly relevant today, a fact that made it an intriguing choice for Director Anushka Senanayake to base this tale for his production for Elizabeth Moir Senior School’s upcoming production.

“West Side Story, School Edition’ makes this iconic musical more accessible for young performers” explains Anushka “This musical has transcended time, it remains as powerful and poignant as ever. The intricate choreography, soaring music, and gripping storyline demands a great deal from performers and our students have stepped out of their comfort zones and pushed themselves to meet the high demands of bringing this story to life. They have taken on every challenge with energy and creativity and we can’t wait to share their work with our audience.”

With musical direction by Sureka Amerasinghe, and choreography by Melissa Fisher, ‘West Side Story, School Edition’ follows the school’s other hugely successful productions including ‘Singin’ in the Rain Jr.’, ‘Alice @ Wonderland’, ‘Rumors’ and ‘Footloose’.

The show stars a cast of more than 50 students, ages 11 to 17. Serika Siriwardhana and Leeth Singhage take on the roles of the romantic leads Maria and Tony, while Aiden Thorstensen is ‘Sharks’ leader Bernardo and Kaavya Gnanam and Gaeun Kim share the roll of the fiery Anita. Anuk Gunasekara plays Riff, the leader of the ‘Jets’.

‘West Side Story, School Edition’ is based on a conception of Jerome Robbins and is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI).

West Side Story, School Edition will be held on November 8 and 9 at the Lionel Wendt Theatre. The Electronic Media Partner for the show is TNL Now.

The show is Co Sponsored by Rhino Roofing Products Limited and St Anthony’s Coatings (Pvt) Ltd, with Associate Sponsorship from Cargills Magic.
