The free fertilizer subsidy promised by certain Presidential candidates is a false pledge which can never be fulfilled, National People’s Movement (NPM) Presidential candidate Mahesh Senanayake said.

He was addressing a Presidential election campaign meeting at the Kirimetiyana Sanasa reception hall on Saturday.

Senanayake said the NPM considers the forthcoming Presidential Election a decisive one. The reason behind it was the people’s loss of confidence in present-day political leaders. People entertained fears about their past track record and the promises they made for the future.

The one reason that the NPM was forced to come forward and contest the election was to change the current situation, he said.

Senanayake said he had no intention whatsoever to back out from the Presidential race at any stage as some people alleged. As a former Army Commander who had commanded the armed forces from the frontline, he would never take a step back from his advance.

He said he was coming forward to contest the Presidential Election as a non-party candidate because it enabled him to bring people of all communities and political hues under one umbrella. In future, people would flock around non-party candidates as such candidates could work with all and sundry.

Pledges given by candidates often ended up in shattered hopes. Therefore, he would never give false hopes to the people by holding out various pledges, Senanayake said.

The free fertiliser subsidy pledged by certain candidates was a blatant lie because it could never be fulfilled. He was a candidate who would not make such false promises, he said.

Senanayake said his main objective was to make Sri Lanka renowned as a country self-sufficient in food.
